Hi, I’m Sally. I am the human who lives here, which on paper makes me the one in charge. In practice I answer to four cats, a rotating cast of foster kittens, and a Facebook group full of people trying to find their lost pets at eleven at night. It is a full life. I would not trade a minute of it.
Yes, I am a cat lady. We have discussed this.
Somewhere along the way I stopped counting cats and started keeping a tally. Thirty of them have owned me over my lifetime. Not all at once, I promise, though a few years were closer than my family would have liked. Some stayed for eighteen years. Some passed through on their way to their own people. Every one of them rearranged the furniture of my heart, and at least one rearranged the actual furniture.
The current administration
The house is presently run by four cats, all named after Frozen characters, a theme I inherited rather than chose. It began with Sven. He arrived as a two-week foster with seven toes on one foot and the calm confidence of a cat who already owned the place. The two weeks are ongoing, several years later. Foster failure is the kind term. Quiet takeover is the honest one.
Once Sven set the tone, the rest fell in line. Elsa governs from the top of the bookshelf and regards me as staff. Olaf loves everyone, every warm spot, and any door left open by even an inch. And there is a fourth, who is still reviewing her naming options and will let me know when she is ready. Deeply on brand for this household.
Why there are always kittens
I foster kittens for our local shelter, which means the spare room is often occupied by very small, very loud tenants who pay no rent and cannot be reasoned with. Fostering is the best hard thing I know. You pour everything into these ridiculous little creatures, get them healthy and brave and social, then hand them to their forever people and cry the whole drive home. Ten out of ten. Would sob again.
The lost pet thing
Years ago a neighbor’s cat went missing, and I stayed up half the night sharing his photo and knocking on doors. We found him. Something clicked in me that night. Now I run a Facebook community for lost and found pets around Denton, because a frightened animal and a heartbroken family should never have to search for each other alone. If you have lost or found a pet nearby, that group is the fastest way to get eyes on it.
About this blog, and who is really writing it
This is where I write about the cats, the fostering, the ones we help find their way home, and whatever else the day drags in. Fair warning: the cats have opinions, and they have located the keyboard. Some of the posts here are theirs. I have made my peace with it. You will know their work when you see it. Sven writes like a founder. Elsa writes like she is doing you a favor. Olaf writes in all capital letters.
So that is us. Four cats, an endless parade of kittens, one very active group chat about missing pets, and me, holding a lint roller. Thank you for being here. Make yourself at home, and watch where you sit. There is almost certainly a cat there.
